After dinner, Ned asked Gavin to meet him in the parlor. When they were alone, he presented Gavin with his sword, shined and sharpened to perfection. The elderly man’s grip on the handle shook from the sheer weight of the ancient piece of weaponry.
Gavin accepted his sword. The man’s precision to detail was a gift of mastery. He could not have done as well if he’d deemed it done himself.
“‘Tis a fine job,” he boasted with the sword held straight out from his hand and his words spoken in English, keeping the promise he made to Ericka and her aunt that he would practice. He smiled at Ned. “‘Tis a fine job, indeed.”
A slender smile twisted Ned’s otherwise surly lips. He sauntered to the liquor cabinet and pulled a large, green bottle capped with the old-style, replaceable plug and snap.
“Don’t blame’s ya for not wantin’ ta taint yer palate with wine at dinner. Not when there’s homemade mead awaitin’ ya.” He winked as he poured two cups of the hearty substance.
Gavin forced a smile, not daring to tell the reason he chose not to drink the wine at dinner. Just the scent of the red liquid made his stomach knot with the knowledge of what he’d done to Ericka. Wine was a substance with which he held no control, though he knew in his gut the wine wasn’t to blame for his stupidity. The lack of control over his lust was his undoing with Ericka.
When handed the cup, he took it warily. After touching his cup to Gavin’s, Ned gulped a swallow down. Gavin sniffed the substance. A spark of recognition fired up forgotten memory cells. Mead. Now this was a liquid he could handle. He tossed back the first cup, then belched. Holding out his cup, Ned refilled it. Times may have changed, but the drink in his hand hadn’t.
